Our brief was to transform the existing house into a liveable home for a growing family. To do this the best of the existing house was enhanced, and flexible open planned spaces were added at the rear, optimising access to the garden and newly created courtyards. Materials and forms complement the existing house and bring light and air through the building.

Designed on a narrow complex site, this proposal had to deal site constraints such as lot size, overland flow, and subsurface infrastructure. Through intricate design process together with the client we have been able to achieve a resolution that has met the clients yield expectations.

This acreage home was designed with its entry and two wings – one containing bedrooms, the other living areas –oriented around the central courtyard and swimming pool. Our clients’ love of Japanese style informed the planning, roof design, and classic colonnade of oversized timber columns surrounding the pool. Interiors feature high ceilings and exposed trusses.

This project involves the subdivision of the existing site; relocation, raising, and renovation of the existing Queenslander, and design of the duplex. AAD’s town planners, architects, and construction manager have been involved in the delivery of this project from initial feasibility advice, through to the resolution of designs and sourcing of realistic budget costing.

Flooding, overland flow, existing trees, and the clients’ desire to capture city views were some of the considerations that informed the design of this Queenslander renovation. The existing dwelling is to be raised, receive largely cosmetic renovations, and connected to a 2 storey extension at the rear of the site via a new entry link that passes a garden courtyard. Connection to the outside and infiltration of light and air is maximised, and the arrangement of site access and entry doors allow flexibility as the clients’ needs change – whether to have a large family home, granny flat, Air BnB rentals, or work from home surgery.

Located in a Sydney bayside suburb, this proposal was designed to be a cost effective solution to an expanding family living in a small run down detached dwelling. The house has been extended to the rear as well as over the current dwelling.
